Buy Black Sapote Fruit Box
Buy Black Sapote Fruit Box, or black persimmon, is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 8m tall. Its leaves are leathery, glossy, and tapered at both ends. The flowers are white, tubular, and lobed. Though it is native to Mexico, the black Sapote is hardy and can survive outside of tropical areas, as long as it is protected from frost during its first few years.
The fruit itself is quite unique and closely related to the persimmon and Mabolo. The Spanish apparently carried the fruit to Amboyna before 1692 and to the Philippines long before 1776. It eventually spread to Hawaii, Brazil, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
What to look for Beforebuying black sapotes
Due to their delicate nature, ripe black sapotes are rarely found in U.S. supermarkets. When they are available, they are often sold slightly underripe. These fruits start out green and firm, but turn black and mushy as they ripen. Although a perfectly ripe sapote may look a little overripe with soft spots and darker areas, avoid fruits with broken skin.
Much like the persimmon, black sapotes are extremely bitter when unripe, leaving the mouth with a dry, “puckered” feeling the sapote chocolate pudding fruit.
