Captain Bligh introduced Otaheite apples to Jamaica from Tahiti in 1793, although their original source is believed to be Malaysia. Since then, they have proliferated across the island and become a staple fruit in Jamaican cuisine and culture.

These fruits are recognized internationally as Malay Apples, Rose Apples, or Mountain Apples, with their Latin name being Syzygium Malaccense.
